هذا الكتاب دعوة للفسلفة، ليس للفلسفة التي يدرسونها ويدرسونها في المعاهد، ولا هو دعوة لفسلفة ما ولا حتى للفسلفة التي يزعم المؤلف أنه يقدمها في ثنايا الكتاب وغيره من كتاباته، بل دعوة للتفلسف، دعوة لأن نمارس حقنا الإنساني في أن نسأل ونتساءل ونسائل، وهو حق نتمتع به ونمارسه كلنا ونحن أطفال، ثم تسلبنا إياه شواغل الأيام، ويسلبنا إياه ما يفرض على عقولنا من قيود ومسلمات، ولأن الكتاب دعوة لأن يتسعيد عقلنا حقه في التفكير الحر المستقل، فإنه لا يطالب القارئ أن يأخذ كل ما فيه على أنه تحد وإثارة ودعوة لأن يكون لنفسه فلسفته الخاصة، فالحياة بغير فلسفة هي حياة منقوصة، أو هي - كما يقول سقراط - ليست حياة لإنسان، ليس هذا الكتاب مقدمة لدراسة الفسلفة وليس مدخلاً إلى الفسلفة، إنما هو مجاهدة فلسفية خالصة، تتضافر وتتلاحم فيها التأملات حول الحقيقة النهائية وحول المعرفة وحول القيم في منظومة متسقة، ساعياً لأن يعود بالفلسفة لدورها الفاعل في حياة الإنسان، بعد أن حولتها الاتجاهات الحديثة إلى مجموعة من الدراسات التخصصية الهامشية والتقنيات التي لا يمكن لها أن تقرب المسائل النهائية التي نشأت الفسلفة أصلاً لتجابهها.
