"أيها الملاك المُفعَم بالطيبة، هل تعرف الكراهية، والقبَضات المتشنّجة فى الظلام ودموع المرارة، حين يُعلن الانتقام نداءه الجهنَّمي، ويجعل من نفسه قائداً لقوانا؟" بودلير - من ديوان "أزهار الشر". يتجاسر مَنْ يعتدي على خصمه لأنه لا يخافه، وهذا معناه أن شعوراً بالتفوق يتملّكه. ولو لم يستجب المُعتَدى عليه لاعتُبر ضعيفاً عند كل مَنْ يُفترض أن يحترمه. وبالتالي يصبح الثأر ليس مجرّد حق، إنما هو ثأر لشرفه، وعلى ثأره أن يُفزع أولئك الذين سيحاولون بدَورهم الاعتداء عليه. لو كان الثأر مثل وجبة باردة، لكان ثأراً متحضّراً، يُختزل في أفعال هيّنة وليس فيها عنف مبالَغٌ فيه. لكن الثأر ينتج عن مشاعر يؤجّجها الغضب وتخزّنها الضغينة التي تطلق الكراهية والحقد حتى يتحوّل الثأر إلى هاجس تدمير الآخر. إنه كراهية لا تختبئ، فطالب الثأر يحرص على أن يكشف عمله في اللحظة التي يضرب فيها، كأنه بهذه الطريقة يريد أن يقول إنني الأقوى. يظنّ أنه ينفِّذ العدالة، وهو بذلك يقيم عدالة يقرّرها بنفسه. إن عدالة الثأر لا تقبل المِثل. إنها تسعى إلى التدمير، تدمير الخصم، وحتى تدمير الذات أيضاً. عبر نماذج من التراث الانساني، ومن الفلسفة والسينما والأدب يقدّم هذا الكتاب فكرة الثأر.
