فصول هذا الكتاب تختص بشرح معاني الإيمان التي يذكرها المتكلّمون والفلاسفة والعرفاء لهذا المفهوم الديني، وهذه المعاني وإن لم تستوعب جميع ما ذكره علماء اللاهوت في معنى الإيمان ولكنّها أهم ما ذكر في هذا المجال، وهذه الفصول، بالإضافة إلى إستعراض معاني للمفهوم المهم، تشترك فيما بينها بوجه من الوجوه وذلك أنّها تقوم جميعها على أساس عنصر حرية الفكر والإرادة لدى الإنسان. إنّ الإيمان، سواء كان بمعنى الإعتقاد برسالة الأنبياء، أو العمل بالوظائف الذاتية للإنسان، أو بمعنى المعرفة الفلسفية، أو التوجه القلبي إلى الله تعالى، لا يتحقق إلاّ من خلال توافر عنصر حرية الفكر والإرادة لدى الإنسان، وعليه فإنّ جميع المعاني المذكورة للإيمان لا تتحقق في واقع الإنسان إلاّ إذا عاش التحرر في فكره وإرادته من قيود العناصر الخارجية والداخلية. إنّ الإيمان على أيّة حال وبأي معنّى يمثّل هدية إلهيّة وعطاءً ربانياً للإنسان، ولكنّ هذه الهدية لا يحصل عليها إلاّ من امتلك القابلية لنيل هذه المنحة المعنوية، وهو الإنسان الذي يعيش حرية الفكر والإرادة.
