يعتبر التحليل المالي أدة لتشخيص للوضعية المالية الماضة والحاضرة للمؤسسة واتخاذ القرارات المستقبلية من خلال القوائم المالية التي تتضمن كما كبيرا من البيانات المحاسبية الخاصة بالفترات المالية السابقة الحالية، لذلك لا يكفي إعداد القوائم المالية والكشوف المحاسبية وإنما يجب تحليلها باستخدام الأساليب والأدوات المناسبة لتحويل تلك البيانات إلى معلومات مفيدة عن أداء المؤسسة في الماضي إضافة إلى التنبؤ بمستقبلها، ثم تفسير نتائج التحليل لخدمة كافة الأطراف المستخدمة للبيانات المحاسبية، ويعتبر التحليل باستخدام المؤشرات المالية من أقدم أدوات التحليل المالي وأهمها. ومن بين القوائم المالية الجديدة التي يمكن أن تفيد المحلل المالي نجد جدول التدفقات النقدية للخزينة، الذي يمكن تحليله من خلال بعض المؤشرات التي يمكن استخلاصها منه، بحيث تعتبر من الوظائف المهمة للتحليل المالي، حيث يوفر جدول التدفقات النقدية معلومات لا يظهرها جدول حسابات النتائج ولا الميزانية التي يتم اعدادها على أساس الاستحقاق.
