يعتبر التحليل المالي أداة لتشخيص للوضعية المالية الماضية والحاضرة للمؤسسة وإتخاذ القرارات المستقبلية من خلال القوائم المالية التي تتضمن كما كبيراً من البيانات المحاسبية الخاصة بالفترات المالية السابقة الحالية، لذلك لا يكفي إعداد القوائم المالية والكشوف المحاسبية وإنما يجب تحليلها بإستخدام الأساليب والأدوات المناسبة لتحويل تلك البيانات إلى معلومات مفيدة عن أداء المؤسسة في الماضي إضافة إلى التنبؤ بمستقبلها، ثم تفسير نتائج التحليل لخدمة كافة الأطراف المستخدمة للبيانات المحاسبية، ويعتبر التحليل بإستخدام المؤشرات المالية من أقدم أدوات التحليل المالي وأهمها.
كما يعرف التحليل المالي من خلال هذه المدرسة على أنه عبارة عن تقييم للأداء المالي للمؤسسة وذلك بهدف معرفة نقاط القوة والضعف في أداء المؤسسة، ومن ثم وضع الحلول لنقاط الضعف لمعالجتها والمحافظة وتعزيز نقاط القوة فيها، وتعتمد هذه العملية على مجموعة من المعايير أو المقاييس التي يمكن إستخدامها للتعرف على طبيعة الأداء المالي للمؤسسات والذي يعكس نتائج الأداء في الوظائف والإدارات الأخرى، وهذه المعايير هي مقاييس الربحية أو التكلفة، مقاييس السيولة والمديونية، مقاييس النشاط أو إدارة الأصول ومقاس النمو.
