في الكتاب وعبر ستة أقسام يتنقل الكاتب بين شخصيات متنوعة وسمهم بألقاب مختلفة وهم شخصيات تنوعت أمزجتها فمنهم مجرمين قتلوا اقرب الناس إليهم، ومنهم عظماء سقطوا بطريقة أقرب إلى "الملحمة الشعرية" منها إلى الميتة البسيطة أو العادية، من جنكيز خان إلى تروتسكي، سنوات تفصل، لكن الحكاية تتكرر، فها هو تيموجين الصغير الذي شاهد عائلته تُقتل أمامه، يتحول سفاحاً لا يعرف الرحمة. يعلق رأس إبنه على رمح خارج معسكره، هو الصراع على السلطة الدائم في كل زمان ومكان ... شخصيات عديدة لا يتسع المجال للإضاءة عليها، ولكنها مفصلة وموثقة بأحداثها ووقائعها وغرائبها جمعها الكاتب على غرار ألف ليلة وليلة، من قرون موغلة في القدم، لتتوارثها الأجيال، تقرأ عنها، كأيقونة فنية، على الرغم من كونها اقرب إلى الدراما القائمة على دماء البشر.
توزع الكتاب على ستة عناوين هي: 1- سفاحون وعظماء، 2- مؤمنون وكفرة، 3- عشق ومآسي، 4- ثوار وعباقرة، 5- صعاليك ومجرمون، 6- أمكنة وأشياء.
