ولد الدكتور نجم عبد الكريم عام ١٩٤٠، وهو كويتي من أصول عراقية.
في مطلع الستينيات كان ضمن مؤسسي فرقة المسرح العربي بقيادة زكي طليمات، إذ شارك في تمثيل مسرحية «صقر قريش»، إلى جانب تقديمه العديد من البرامج الإذاعية..
وصدر قرار بتعيينه نائباً لرئيس الإذاعة الشعبية.
أوفد في بعثة لإتمام دراسته الجامعية في القاهرة، وهناك عُيّن مندوباً لإذاعة الكويت، وإذاعة أبو ظبي.
وكان يوافي الإذاعة الكويتية ببرامج «أديب الأسبوع»، وإذاعة أبو ظبي ببرنامج «مع أهل الفن».
بعدما أتمّ دراسته عاد إلى الكويت ليعمل رئيساً لقسم السينما، فرئيساً لقسم المنوعات في تلفزيون الكويت.
وفي عام ١٩٧٥ تقرر إيفاده إلى جامعة جنوب كاليفورنيا في لوس أنجلوس للحصول على درجة الماجستير والدكتوراه في الإعلام، وبعد أن أتمّ دراسته عاد إلى الكويت عام ١٩٨٠، وانتُدب إلى جامعة الكويت للتحضير لقسم الإعلام، إلى جانب قيامه بتدريس مادة «سايكولوجية الرأي العام والإعلام» في كلية الآداب.
قدم العديد من البرامج التلفزيونية التي تتسم بالطابع الأدبي لكل من تلفزيون الكويت وتلفزيون أبو ظبي، كما أخرج بعض المسرحيات مثل «بني صامت» و«حكمت محكمة السلطان».
