جون رونالد رويل تولكين (3 يناير 1892 - 2 سبتمبر 1973) فيلولوجي إنكليزي وكاتب روائي وأستاذ جامعي عرف بشكل خاص في سلسلته الملحمية المدعوة "سيد الخواتم" ورواية "الهوبيت" إضافة لأعمال أخرى.
عمل أستاذا في جامعة أكسفورد لمادة اللغة الأنجلوساكسونية (1925 - 1945) ثم أستاذاً للغة الإنجليزية وآدابها (1945 إلى 1959).
كان مقربا من كلايف لويس بمشاركتهما في مجموعة نقاش حول الأدب اللاشكلي عرفت باسم إنكلنغ (بالإنجليزية: Inklings) وقد منحت الملكة إليزابيث الثانية تولكين وسام الإمبراطورية البريطانية من رتبة قائد في 28 مارس 1972.
Book Description
هذا هو الجزء الثاني من سيد الخواتم. الجزء الأول "رفقة الخاتم" استعرض كيف اكتشف جندلف الأشيب أن الخاتم الذي كان يملكه فرودو والهوبيتي كان في واقع الأمر الخاتم الأوحد، حاكم جميع خواتم السلطة والقوة. وقد قص حكاية فرار فرودو ورفاقه من المقاطعة الهادئة التي كانت موطنهم، ويطاردهم رعب خيالة موردور السود، حتى وصلوا أخيراً بمساعدة أراجورن جوال إرياورد عبر أخطار محاطة باليأس إلى منزل إلروند في ريفندل. وهناك عقد مجلس إلروند الأعظم، والذي تقرر فيه محاولة تدمير الخواتم، وقد توالت وتتابعت الأحداث وعندما بات واضحاً أن حامل الخاتم كان عازماً على مواصلة رحلته اليائسة إلى أرض العدو، حاول بورومير أن يستولى على الخاتم بالقوة. وانتهى الجزء الأول بسقوط بورومير في غواية الخاتم؛ مع هروب واختفاء فرودو وخادمه ساموايز؛ وتشتت أفراد الصحبة الباقين من جراء هجوم مفاجئ للجنود الأوركيين، وكان بعضهم في خدمة سيد الظلام في موردور، وبعضهم في خدمة الخائن سارومان في آيزنجارد. وقد بدأ بالفعل أن مهمة حامل الخاتم قد لحقت بها كارثة. أما الجزء الثاني البرجان، فهو يروى الآن كيف ارتحل كل فرد من أفراد صحبة الخاتم، بعد أن انقضت صحبتهم وتفرقت، حتى قدوم الظلمة العظيمة واندلاع حرب الخاتم، والتي سيتم سرد حكايتها في الجزء الثالث والأخير.
