تطمح هذه الرّواية إلى عرض شخصيّة "مرتضى الشامخ" الذي ترك دار الباشا" ثم عاد إليها بعد أربعين عاماً لا يستطيع قارئ الرواية أن يتمثلها، فتغيب الوقائع والأحداث المتعلّقة بهذه المرحلة الطويلة من حياة الشّخصيّة المحوريّة ولا نكاد ندرك ملامحها إلا عبر إشارات تبريريّة يصرح بها السّارد في بعض مواطن الرّواية أهمّهُا ما ورد بالفصل السّابق عندما يقول "خرجت مُمزَّقاً طريد أفكارك، تلاحق أوهاماً وأشباحاً، تقاذفتك الأهواء والعواصم واختلطت عليك اللغات المختلفة شرقيها وغربيها: من باريس إلى لندن ومن جنيف إلى بون ومنها إلى طهران فدمشق فبيروت، تقلبت ظهراً على بطن، وانتفضت من الأعماق حتى غشي عليك، اختلطت عليك السبل، ففقدت السيطرة على نفسك، أضعت توازنك، تزلزل كيانك من الجذور حتى كفرت بكل شيء، أصبت بصدمة حضارية حادة، تملكك الذهول، فخرجت على الناس مذهولاً، لتلقي ما تبقى منك في جحيم الصحراء" وعبثاً يبحث القارئ عن ملامح هذه السبل التي اختلطت على مرتضى الشامخ أو عن هذه الصدمة الحضاريّة الحادة الّتي واجهها فلا يعدو الأمر أن يكون من باب التبرير اللّفظي لهذه الوضعية الّتي وضع فيها المؤلف شخصيته وهي تباشر حياتها في دار الباشا" بعد انقطاع طويل وعودة مفاجئة مفعمة بحنين جارف إلى المكان.
