عندما كان كونستانتين ستانسلافسكي يكتب كتابه الكبير "حياتي في الفن"، كان لا يترك مناسبة يعرض فيها بالحديث عن الطريقة المثلى لتعليم الممثل كيف يجيد فنه ويتمكن منه، إلا فضل إرجاء تفصيل هذا الحديث إلى كتابه هذا "إعداد الممثل" الذي لم يكن قد كتبه بعد... والذي فكر نهائياً في كتابته وهو يزور فنلندة سنة 1906، وذلك حينما جلس فوق إحدى الربوات المشرفة على مياه الخليج، وراح يفكر في ماضيه في التمثيل بعد تلك الفترة الحالكة، التي مرّ بها مسرح الفن بموسكو بعد وفاة تشيكوف، وبعد سقوط مسرحيات ميترلنك العظيم التي قام بإخراجها ستانسلافسكي نفسه، وبعد أن خيل إليه أنه لم يبلغ ما كانت تتوق إليه نفسه من السمو والارتفاع إلى ذروة الفن الصحيح الصادق.
ويعد كتاب ستانسلافسكي هذا "إعداد الممثل" أول كتاب عملي فيما يسمى بحق "كتاب نحو التمثيل" أو قواعده ودروسه التي لا يمكن أن يتمكن ممثل من فنه المسرحي إلا إذا وعاها، وحرص على دراستها دراسة عميقة تطبيقية مستوفاة. وأهم ما يهدف إليه الكتاب هو الإحساس بالصدق أثناء تأدية الممثل لدوره، ثم العمل على توفير المزاج أو الجو الخلاق في أثناء التمثيل... وذلك بالبعد عن التمثيل الآلي والقوالب الزائفة التي يلجأ إليها الدجالون المشعوذون ممن يحترفون حرفة التمثيل لكي يصفق لهم الجمهور.
