إن أديب هذا العصر الذي حوصرت حريته من كل جانب يدرك أن الفن هو أسمى فعل من أفعال الحرية يمكن أن يأتيه الإنسان، وهو أوضح بصيرة من سلفه الرومانسى الذي كان يتوهم أن شخصيته جوهر غريب نادر لا يخضع لشيء من مواصفات المجتمع إلا مرغماً، وأن الفن هو وسيلة للفكاك من هذه المواصفات.
وإلى هذا فإن أديب هذا العصر يعلم أن شخصيته نتاج مجتمعه، وأن كل ما يتلقاه من أفكار ومشاعر هو من صنع هذا المجتمع، حتى فنه هو أيضاً صورة لمجتمعه. لذا فإن رؤيا الفنان تظل مقيدة بطابع الحضارة التي ينتمي إليها، تتأثر بكل ما تتأثر به هذه الحضارة من عوامل، ولكنها تطمح لتستشرف المطلق، وتجذب الحضارة، لا حضارة قومه فحسب، بل حضارة البشرية جمعاء، إلى رحابه.
عن هذا التصور للأدب صدرت مقالات هذا الكتاب "الرؤيا المقيدة"، والكاتب لم يحاول استمالة تصوره الذي عكسته مقالاته من فلسفة معينة، ولكنه صاغه من معايشة طويلة لروائع الأدب القديم والحديث، وثانيهما أنه لم يضع هذا التصور أمامه حين شروعه في هذه الدراسات ليطمئن القارئ أنه ليس أمام تطبيق آلي لنظرية لا يرضاها، بل إنه سيجد في هذه الدراسات ما يناقض النظرية التي أوضحها الكاتب، هذا إن جاز تسمية التصور نظرية.
