قال الناقد الكبير محمود أمين العالم عن هذه الرواية: "على كثرة الروايات الجيدة التي عالجت نفس أزمة الرواية، فإن "زهر الليمون" تعد إضافة حقيقية للرواية العربية عامة سواء ببنيتها الفنية، أو بما تعبر عنه تعبيرا عميقا من خبرة إنسانية حية صادقة." رحلة دائرية تبدأ من حجرة البطل الصغيرة فوق سطح بيت في السويس وتنتهي في القاهرة بين الأسرة وأصدقاء قدامى، في عطلة نهاية الأسبوع. رحلة تبدو نزولا إلى الماضي والعودة منه، تعود خلالها ملامح هذا الماضي بذكرياته المختلفة، لكن خلفية هذه الرحلة الخاطفة هي عمق ما عاناه هذا الجيل منذ سنوات الخمسينيات والستينيات من محنة واغتراب. ولد "علاء الديب" في المعادي عام 1939. صدر له حتى الآن خمس روايات تعد علامات بارزة في مسيرة الرواية العربية "زهر الليمون"1978 و"أطفال بلا دموع" 1979، و"قمر على المستنقع" 1993، و"عيون البنفسج" 1999، و"أيام وردية" 2002، ومجموعتان قصصيتان بالإضافة إلى ترجمات عديدة أهمها "كتاب الطاو" للفيلسوف الصيني "لاو تسو"، كما قدم واحدة من أفضل ما كتب في فن السيرة الذاتية عنوانها "وقفة قبل المنحدر"1990. وقد حصل على جائزة الدولة التقديرية عام 2001.
