«ما رأيكِ بسيجارة؟»، ودسستُ بسيجارة مُشتعلة بين فَكَّيْها. غادرتْني وهي تُدخِّن بأناقة الدِّبلوماسيِّيْن، دائمة الانشغال في السَّعي للبحث عن مصادر الغذاء الضَّروريِّ للبقاء على قيد الحياة؛ كانت الحِرْبَاءُ على أُهْبَة الاستعداد لرَمْي السيجارة من فمها، كي تقتنصَ ذبابة. أبدَتْ لي خمولاً، لكنَّها كانت على أُهْبَة الاستعداد للانقضاض على الفريسة القادمة.
نَظَرْتُ إلى ساعتي التي كانت تُشير إلى العاشرة. وإذنْ فقد كنتُ سائراً منذُ ساعةٍ وعشرين دقيقةً. كان الدرب ضيِّقاً، ينقسم في بعض الحالات، ليعود مُتَّحداً من جديد بعد قليل: كان المسير مُريحاً، مُريحاً للغاية، بارتفاعات خفيفة للغاية، تليها مسافات من الأرض المنبسطة، وهذا هو بالذات ما جَعَلَنِي أشعر بأنَّني أخطأتُ الطريق. فبعد مُضيِّ ما يربو على نصف ساعة من المسير، لم أعُد أرى أجداث بغالٍ نافقة، عفَّنَتْها الشمس. ومع ذلك، فقد اجترحتُ لذلك تفسيراً، فالبغال، وبرَغْمِ اعتيادها على الانضباط العسكري وانصياعها له، لا تموت دائماً عند الحجارة الدَّالَّة على الطُّرُق، كما لا تُقرِّر توزيع أجداثها النافقة بالتساوي على مسافات المسير، فقد تعثرُ على ثلاثة أجداثٍ متراكمة على بعضها في حفرة، ومن ثمَّ تسير لعشر كيلومترات دون أن تلتقيَ بأيِّ منها، إلَّا أنَّني شَعَرْتُ في تلك اللحظة بأنَّني لم أرتفع عن مستوى النهر لأكثر من مائة متر. فالجبال ما تزال قائمة أمام ناظرَيَّ، بوضوح أكبر رَغْمَ الأحراش التي تَحول دونَ رؤيتها في بعض المناطق.
واصلتُ المسير: أَعلمُ بأن الطُّرُق المُختصرة تُقبَلُ ولا تُناقَش، وبالتأكيد سأُطلُّ بعد قليلٍ على إحدى حافَّات الهضبة، وقد يكون ذلك بالقرب من مطبخ معسكر، تتصاعد منه الأبخرة وروائح الطعام، أو ربَّما سأُطلُّ على مَرْأَب واسعٍ للشاحنات: نعم هكذا هي الطُّرُقُ المختصرة.
