صدر كتاب "مفهوم الفزع" في 17 حزيران عام 1844. في خريف عام 1843 كتب كيركگورد في المسودة، موضحا: " في غياب المهمة الهائلة المتمثلة في فهم جميع البشر، فقد اختار ما يرغب المرء في تسميته صبيانية وحماقة، لفهم نفسه - وجهة نظر يتم الحفاظ عليها في النسخة النهائية من المقدمة، حيث يصف المؤلف نفسه بأنه سليل الذي لم يسبق له مثيل في العالم، ولم يقم سوى برحلة داخلية داخل وعيه". وكان كيركگورد قد اختار في البداية، أن يضع اسمه على مسودة الكتاب، إلاّ أنه غيّر رأيه ووضع بدلا من ذلك اسما مستعارا.والاسم هو فيجيليوس هاوفنينسس، الذي يعني بالدانماركية "الكوبنهاكي اليقظ"، أي هذا الذي يراقب بانتباه ما يحيط به في كوبنهاكن. أهميته تنبع من مراقبة أفعال الناس وطريقة تصرفاتهم وكيف يواجهون الفزع.يعالج الكتاب بعمق مفهوم الفزع من وجهة نظر فلسفية، باعتبارها ظاهرة وجودية تنفتح على فهم سايكولوجي للانسان، حيث يقوم بربط مجالي علم الدوغما (العقائد) وعلم النفس مع بعضهما، لاضاءة ثيمات مختلفة تدور حول الخطيئة الاصلية للانسان، ثم اختيار الانسان لحريته و الفزع الذي يرافق الاثنين أو يسبقهما، وأخيرا كيفية غفران خطيئة الانسان.استفاد العديد من الفلاسفة، الذين جاؤا بعد كيركگورد، من كتاب مفهوم الفزع، وأخص بالذكر، هنا، الفيسلوف الالماني مارتن هايدغر، وخاصة في كتابه “الوجود والزمن”. كما أنه هيأ الطريق، بفترة طويلة قبل سيغموند فرويد، لعلم النفس، في معالجة ومناقشة واحدة من القضايا التي تشغل الانسان، وأعني بها فزعه الدائم وعدم استقراره من شيء قد يكون في داخله أصلا، متخذا من أطروحة الخطيئة التي طرحتها الأديان أو الأساطير منطلقا لفهم هذا الفزع.
