أصبحت وجوه النساء المليئة بالخوف تحدق بنظرات جانبية في زاوية ميتة. لا شيء بين الرجال والنساء سوى التمزيق. وليس المجتمع المدني سوى وشاح خفيف فوق الوحشية الضارية والنزعة إلى أكل اللحم البشري نيئاً، وليست الأعراف والفنون المتحضرة سوى مخالب مقروضة تنمو باستمرار. تفترس الأم ابنها فيعود عبر الدم إلى جسد من أخرجته. تلك هي النشوة الدامية التي تشكل أساس المجتمعات البشرية، إذ تسلم كل أم ابنها، لدى خروجه منها، إلى الموت.
أما الدافع لتأليف هذا الكتاب، فيوضحه باسكال كينيار بقوله: "ما الذي دعاني، طيلة كل هذه السنين، لوضع هذا الكتاب؟
