تُعدُّ "المقدِّمة الأزهرية في علم العربية" لصاحبها الشيخ خالد الأزهري من أنفس المتون التي أُلِّفت في علم النحو قاطبة، تناولها العلماء بالشرح، وكان في صدراة هؤلاء الشرّاح الأزهريُّ نفسُه، ثم جاء من بعده علي بن إبراهيم الحلبي، المتوفى 1044هـ؛ ليضع هذا الشرح بقلم أديب وعلم عالم، ولقد تميَّز الحلبي بأسلوبه الرصين في إيراد النص ضمن عبارته بتصرف ظاهر في التعبير، فصار النقل عن المصنِّف على عُهدته، بصورة لا يكاد القارئ يشعر معها أن الكتاب مكوَّن من متن وشرح. وقد اعتمد المحقق في هذه الطبعة على نسختين خطيَّتينِ مع معارضته بشروح الأزهرية الأخرى، فوقع الكتاب في جزأين؛ صدَّره بمقدمة تشمل الكلام على الكتاب وصاحبه ومنهج تحقيقه، وختمه بستة فهارس تكشف كنوز الكتاب للمطالع.
