وفي الرواية يبدو أن الماضي الشخصي لكلا الشخصيتين هو ما ساهم في عملية الفراق أكثر من الاختلاف في الوضع الاجتماعي. ففي لحظة من التفكير "تذكرت ليالي مضت حين كانت طفلة تحاول فهم حزن والدتها عندما هجرهما والدها ليقترن بامرأة أخرى يحبها حبه لوالدتها قتله الروتين وذبل مع الزمن بعدما انتهى تاريخ صلاحيته. كانت تبكي بيأس كلما تذكرت ما عانته امرأة وحيدة مع ابنة وحيدة. أيعقل أن تفعل هي بزوجة من تحب ما فعله والدها بها وبوالدتها؟..". وأدركت أنه لن يجمعهما بعد الآن الوطن ذاته، ستعود هي إلى وطن أنذرهما منذ البداية أنهما نقيضان لا يلتقيان، وأنهما لن يستمرا في رحلة العمر، وأن حكايتهما بئيسة حُكم عليها بالفضل قبل أن تبدأ.
في "جراح مغتربة" نجحت "يحانث ماء العينين" في التغلغل إلى نفسية المرأة والرجل معاً من خلال رصد التحولات في شخصية أبطالها. كما في الحوار الذي تقيمه بين الشخوص الذي يأتي كمنولوج داخلي تارة وبشكل مباشر تارة أخرى، والسير باتجاه الرومانسية المطلقة، التي تبلغ شأوها أحياناً في استعارات جميلة أو كنايات معبرة، أو صور شعرية، مما يدخل في المستوى غير المباشر للكتابة. وهي إطلالات شفيفة ترويها الكاتبة عن بنات جنسها، على طريقتها وبلغتها، مما يوقظ في قارئها الرغبة في المتابعة حتى النهاية....
