شكّل الأمراء اليزيديون دورًا محوريًا طوال تاريخ عسير الحديث، وثمة أسباب عديدة أهّلتهم لأن يحوزوا على هذا الدور، يأتي في مقدمتها عمقهم التاريخي والقَبَلي، وتجسيدهم الحقيقي للأبعاد الثقافية والاجتماعية لإقليم عسير، إضافة إلى القدرات الشخصية الكبيرة التي تمتّع بها عددٌ من أمرائهم، أمثال الأمير سعيد بن مسلط اليزيدي (ت:1242هـ) والأمير علي بن مجثل اليزيدي (ت:1249هـ) والأمير عائض بن مرعي اليزيدي (ت:1272هـ).
هذا الكتاب لا يرصد كامل الأدوار التاريخية لأمراء آل يزيد، وإنما يحاول رصدها خلال النصف الأول من القرن الثالث عشر الهجري، ويفحص بلغة تحليلية متأنية المنعرجات التاريخية خلال هذه الحقبة، مُتقصيًّا الأدوار التاريخية الجسيمة للأميرين اليزيديين سعيد بن مسلط، وعلي بن مجثل، والتي كانت أدوارًا تنزعُ دومًا نحو استقلال عسير عن أي سُلطة خارجية ترمي الهيمنة عليها.
إن جوهر هذه الدراسة يكمنُ في سعيها الحثيث إلى بلورة مُسمى (الأمراء اليزيديون) كمفهوم يُراد غرسه في تاريخ عسير الحديث. وما كان غرس آل يزيد على هذا النحو ترَفًا إذ هو من الأهمية بمكان، لا سيما إذا ما تم استحضار الأدوار التاريخية لأمراء آل يزيد في تاريخ عسير الحديث، والذي ظلّ حضورهم السياسي محوريًا حتى نهاية العقد الرابع من القرن الهجري الماضي بِحُكم أنّ أمراء آل عائض لم يكونوا في الأصل سوى بيت من بيوت آل يزيد كما أفادت به هذه الدراسة.
إذن، فإن آل يزيد كمفهوم يأتي الآن بشكل واضح لفهم الشرعية التاريخية التي استقاها آل عائض في حكمهم لعسير، وفي ذات الوقت يأتي هذا اللفظ كمفهوم كُلّي يشمل أمراء عسير في عصرها الحديث لا يستثني من ذلك سوى أمراء آل المتحمي التي بدَت إمارتهم ضمن هذه الدراسة معترضة للمسار التاريخي كتجلٍّ من تجليات نجاح دعوة الشيخ محمد بن عبد الوهاب في عسير.
