الصحفيون الآن هم أهداف «كبيرة القيمة» يقبض عليهم من أجل فدية أو غير ذلك، فقد غدت الإعدامات العلنية الجارية تهدف إلى زرع الرعب. لذلك أصبحت مهنة الصحافة أكثر خطورة من ذي قبل والبقاء على قيد الحياة في مناطق الصراع لم يعد أمرًا مؤكدًا أكثر.
إن أرقام الوفيات التي تحتفظ بها منظمات مثل جمعية حماية الصحفيين تزودنا بحصيلة سنوية لأولئك الذين قُتلوا في أثناء تأدية عملهم. والحصيلة النهائية لا تصعق فحسب بل يُظهر تحليل الأرقام حقيقة لا يمكن أن تُرى بسهولة بالنسبة إلى الحساسيات الغربية: إن الغالبية في أرقام الصحفيين القتلى والذين يُقتلون كل عام هم ليسوا من الأسماء العالية المستوى والمألوفة لدى قراء الفضائح الكبيرة أو مشاهدي نشرات أخبار الساعة التاسعة صباحًا. وتعود غالبية هذه الأسماء لصحفيين محليين هم ضحايا العنف الضاري الذي يدمر النسيج الهش لمجتمعهم المدني الذي ينهار بسرعة.
