مفهوم التوتر النفسي من المفاهيم التي ترتبط لا بالإباع فحسب ولكنة يرتبط اساسا بالدافعية ,فالتوتر هو ارتفاع مستوى الدافع حتى درجة معينة بحيث انه اذا قل التوتر عن هذا الحد ,واذا زاد عن هذا الحد, اصبح معطلا للاداء العقلي ,واصبح قوة معطلة.
ذلك ان التوتر المنخفض يقترن بالبلادة كما يقترن التوتر المرتفع بالقلق, وكلاهما قد يكون معطلا لنمو وخصوبة القدرات العقلية.
