يجيب هذا الكتاب عن هذا السؤال من خلال محاورات خاضها الصحفيان الفرنسيان سيدريك بايلوك وميشال بريفو مع إمام مسجد بوردو الكبير في فرنسا الشيخ طارق أوبرو، الذي يتمتع بغزارة وسعة معارفه الدينية الإسلامية والفلسفية الغربية، وهو يمتلك قدرًا هائلا من الالتزام بدينه الإسلامي ومن الاعتداد بالجنسيّة الفرنسيّة التي يحمل، وله في الطائفة الإسلامية في المدينة الفرنسيّة الثالثة أصداء هامة.
فالكتاب موجّه أصلاً إلى قرّاء اللغة الفرنسيّة بعامة، وللفرنسيين خاصة، وربما إلى شرائح معدودة من المجتمع الفرنسي يكون المسلمون في عدادها. وفي الكتاب عرض لقضايا ميتافيزيقية وإشكالات فلسفية – لاهوتية.
كما يبسط الكتاب وجهة نظر كاملة من خلال عرضه للقضايا المختلفة التي خاض فيها، ومن المجدي اطلاع القارئ العربي على إشكالات وقضايا تتصل بالوجود الإسلامي في أوروبا عامة، ومن ذلك قضايا المواطنة الأوروبيّة والديانة الإسلاميّة، واللاييكية، ودلالة الانتساب إلى الإسلام اليوم أو، في عبارة أخرى، المعنى القائم في كون المرء مسلمًا فرنسيًّا أو - بالأحرى - فرنسيًّا (أو غربيًّا عمومًا) يدين بالإسلام. كما أن تلك القراءة، والحافز الآخر، على الإقدام على تعريب الكتاب هو أنه يفتح أمام المسلمين في بلاد الإسلام أو في البلدان ذات الأغلبية الإسلامية العظمى آفاقًا للنظر والتفكير، وربما إعادة التفكير والتأويل معًا، في قضايا تتصل بالتجديد الديني وإعمال الفكر في المعاني العميقة التي تقتضيها مباحث مقاصد الشريعة.
