إنّ عهد السلطان عبد الحميد الثاني مناسب بشكل خاص للدراسة كأرضية للجغرافيا السياسية الحالية للشرق الأوسط وأوروبا الشرقية. فبعض أسباب المشاكل التي تواجه العالم الإسلامي اليوم تعود بجذورها على الأقل إلى القرن التاسع عشر حين وجدت الدولة العثمانية نفسها -وهي الجزء الوحيد من العالم الإسلامي الذي لم يصل إليه بعد الاستعمار الأوروبي- في خضمّ المنافسة بين القوى الكبرى من أجل الأسواق والموارد الجديدة في الشرق.
وبسبب جهوده الحثيثة لانتهاج استراتيتجية عالمية للجامعة الإسلامية، برز السلطان عبد الحميد الثاني كأكثر شخصية مثيرة للجدل بين سلاطين آل عثمان، وكُتب عنه الكثير من الدراسات السلبية والازدرائية التي استمرت في الصدور. إلا أن الكثير من الكتابات المنحازة وغير الموضوعية عن السلطان عبد الحميد وسياسة الجامعة الإسلامية أخذت تحلّ محلّها في العقود الأخيرة دراسات متوازنة وأكثر موضوعية، ساهمت في إبراز صورة أكثر واقعية عن السلطان والتطورات التي حدثت في عهده.
لقد حاول السلطان أن ينقذ الدولة العثمانية من الانهيار، لذا فإنني أعتقد أن هذا الكتاب في موضوعه واستشرافه واعتماده على مصادر غير منشورة بالإنكليزية والعربية والتركية سيضيف نظرة طازجة إلى ما هو موجود من دراسات عن السلطان عبد الحميد والجامعة الإسلامية والتاريخ المعاصر للعالم الإسلامي.
