إننا نصطدم باستمرار بالعديد من ضروب عدم التيقن أو بالأحرى بكم ضخم من القناعات التي تعتبر الثقافات كيانات ثابتة. بيد أن فكرة الثقافة ذاتها هى التي تحول بشكل مفارق دون أن ندرك البعد الثقافي للتحرك السياسي أو النمو الاقتصادي، وذلك أن الدولة بمؤسساتها تفرض مفاهيم جمالية ومعنوية، وتنشر أيضاً قيماً وممارسات تتعلق بالجنس والمآكل والملبس، بل وأيضاً بالشعر.
ومن خلال سياحة ساخرة وغير مآلوفة في الكثير من الحالات، في مجال التخيلات والأهواء السياسية في عالمنا المعاصر، يدعو هذا المؤلف إلى إعادة صياغة المفهوم العام الديمقراطي للتصدى لمن يخوضون المعارك باسم الهوية فالنزاعات المنتشرة حاليا- روب يوغسلافيا والقوقاز والجزائر وإفريقيا السوداء والصدامات بين الطوائف الدينية في الهند- تستمد قوتها المدمرة من الافتراض بأن أي "هوية ثقافية" مزعومة تقابلها "هوية سياسية" هي أيضاً وهمية في حقيقتها.
