لم يستقطب تاريخ اليمامة إلاّ كتابات قليلة، ومعظم ما كُتب عنه يأتي في سياق حروب الردة أو مقرونًا بتاريخ الحجاز، من هذا فلم يحظَ بدراسة موسعة تشمل مدة زمنية طويلة كما هو الحال في هذا الكتاب، الذي يدرس تاريخ اليمامة قبل الإسلام وفي صدر الإسلام، ويعالجه كمنظومة واحدة.
يرى مؤلف الكتاب أن تاريخ اليمامة في صدر الإسلام يحتاج إلى معاودة تبيّن مجمله وتأثيره على تاريخ الجزيرة العربية وربما التاريخ الإسلامي برمته. ويبدو من غير المنطقي النظر إلى تاريخ اليمامة من زاوية الردة أو نبوءة مسيلمة. ذلك أن اليمامة منطقة واسعة وغنية بمقاييس القرنين السادس والسابع الميلاديين، وهي شهدت حراكًا سياسيًا قبل الإسلام وبعده لا يمكن إغفاله.
محاولة تفسير تاريخ اليمامة من منظور جديد لم يسبق أن طُرق من قبل بشكل يتيح الوصول إلى نتائج غير مسبوقة، لهذا فحص المؤلف المصادرَ التاريخية والدينية والمذهبية والاقتصادية والجغرافية والأدبية والتراجم وكتب المال والخراج والسياسة وكتب اللغة والمعاجم وغيرها من أجل التقاط كل شاردة وواردة لإعادة بناء مُجمل تاريخ اليمامة في صدر الإسلام، ثم طبق مفهوم النظرية الإقليمية لتفسير تاريخ اليمامة. لهذا فقد جاء عنوان هذا الكتاب بأنه محاولة لفهم تاريخ اليمامة في صدر الإسلام.
