واحدة من الرحلات التي تضاربَت حولها الآراء بين مُنكرٍ لها، ومثْنٍ عليها، لكن هؤلاء وأولئك اتفقوا على أن فيها وصفًا أمينًا في كثيرٍ من جوانبها لحياة البادية وقبائلها وأحوالها وعاداتها وتقاليدها. إنها رحلة الشاب السوري فتح الله ولَد أنطون الصايغ اللاتيني الحلبي التي طالها النسيان في نصِّها العربي وفي ترجمتها الفرنسية.ونحن اليوم نقدِّمها كما كتبها صاحبها لتكون صورة صادقة عن الوضع السائد في حينها. ولا يفوتنا القول: إن فتح الله كان من أوائل الأجانب الذين زاروا مدينة الدرعية، عاصمة الدولة السعودية الأولى ورأى إمامها عبد الله بن سعود بن عبد العزيز بن محمد بن سعود، ووصَفَها وصفًا فريدًا.
إن المبالغات والأخطاء التاريخية التي جنَّد كثير من الباحثين أنفسهم لإبرازها والتعليق عليها، والانطلاق منها لإنكار الرحلة، والقول: إنها من أوهام الصايغ لا تنفي حدوث الرحلة، خصوصاً أن الصايغ دوَّنها بعد زمن من عودته، وأظن أنه فعلَ ذلك على عجل ليبيعها للشاعر الفرنسي لا مارتين، فوقع في أخطاء تاريخية، وبالغ في وصف كثيرٍ من الأحداث، فجاءت مذكّراته أقرب ما تكون إلى الرواية التاريخية التي فيها جانب كبير من الوقائع وكثير من الخيال الروائي.
