عارف تامر العلي (1921 - 1998 م) هو كاتب وشاعر، من أهل سوريا.
ولد في القدموس تابعة لمحافظة طرطوس لأسرة تنتمي لفرع محمد شاه من الاسماعيلية النزارية. وتخرج في كلية الآداب التابعة لجامعة القديس يوسف ببيروت، وحصل على شهادة الدكتوراه في مونتريال في كندا. وعمل مدرسا للغة الفرنسية في ثانويات السلمية، وكذلك درس مادة تاريخ الشرق الأوسط في جامعة القديس يوسف في بيروت.

إلى جانب ترجمة لحياة الأئمة الذين تسنموا مركز الإمامة في عصور مختلفة، وذلك بعد أن يتوقف عند مسألة الإمامة نشوؤها فلسفتها، وفي المقدمة والتي جاءت بمثابة استهلال للكتاب تحدث الباحث عن بعض الفرق القديمة التي سادت تعاليمها ما قبل الإسلام فتناول النصرانية والرومانية، الفرس الوثنية، اليهودية ملوك اليمن، أصل قريش عرب الجاهلية، من ثم تحدث عن انبثاق الإسلام، ومسألة الخلافة، والتشيع.
