تحت عنوان «رائد القصة في الجنوب.. قلق التجربة وهاجس التأثير» يقدم الدكتور حسن بن حجاب الحازمي قراءة في تجربة محمد زارع عقيل في القصة القصيرة، وهي كما يذكر المؤلف أول محطة في تجربته القصصية وأول تجربة في القصة القصيرة في منطقة جازان، وهو في الأصل – أي الكتاب – بحث علمي نشر في مجلة علمية، ثم طلب إليَّ نادي جازان – والكلام للمؤلف – تقديمه في محاضرة ضمن برنامج الأثينية النقدي، وبعد المحاضرة عرض علي الزملاء في النادي – مشكورين – طباعته بعد أن أضم إليه القصص التي كتبها الأستاذ محمد زارع عقيل والتي لم يكتب له أن يجمعها وينشرها في مجموعة قصصية، وظلت حبيسة مجلة المنهل، وهي شبه مجهولة بالنسبة لكثير من القراء، فاستحسنت الفكرة وبدأت العمل عليها، ليظهر هذا الكتاب بالصورة التي بين أيديكم مشتملاً على تعريف بالكاتب الأديب الأستاذ محمد زارع عقيل، ثم الدراسة التي تناولت تجربته في القصة القصيرة … ثم أثبت قصصه القصيرة التي نشرها تباعاً في مجلة المنهل من عام 1375ه إلى عام 1382ه، ورأيت أن أضع لها عنواناً جامعاً اختاره الكاتب بنفسه، وهو الوفاء، حيث ذكر في ترجمته الشخصية التي نشرت في مجلة المنهل في شهر رجب من عام 1386ه بأن له مجموعة تحت الطبع بعنوان (الوفاء) وهو عنوان إحدى قصصه الخمس، لكن لم يكتب له ذلك، وتوفي رحمه الله قبل أن ينجزها.
