إن التعبير عن الأفكار في إطار سردي روائي ظاهرة أدبية عرفها الأدب العربي الحديث في النصف الأول من القرن العشرين، وهو ما حاول تقديمه الروائي أسعد قطان في مجموعته القصصية الجديدة «قاسم شنايدر في بيروت» فراح يصطنع لكل حكاية شخصية سردية متخيلة، يتقمصها، ويُسند إليها بنات عقله التي يُضمِّنها آراءه وأفكاره وتصوراته وفلسفته في الحياة، ففي «الحكاية» الأولى يلفت الروائي إلى ضرورة الاهتمام بعالم الطفولة فعثمان الطفل الصغير طلب من المارد الذي خرج له من القمم أن يقص عليه حكاية بدلاً من كنوز الدنيا لأن والديه لا يقصان عليه حكاية ما قبل النوم "... وما أدراك أن الحكاية توازي أهمية ما يتطلبه البشر الآخرون من مارد لا يغادر قمقمه إلاّ لماماً..."، وفي «قاسم شنايدر في بيروت» تهكماً واضحاً على الجماهير التي تصفق للخطيب أو كل من يعتلي فوق منبر من دون أن تفقه الموضوع فامرؤ القيس شاب عادي كان ينتظر زوجته في المطار وعندما لم تأت توجه إلى لوحة مكتوباً عليها قاسم شنايدر من دون أن يدري من هو صاحب الشخصية، ليجد نفسه في مؤتمر علمي عقد على شرفه والناس تصفق له بل أكثر من ذلك أخذ يجيب عن أسئلة الحضور والصحافة...
أما في قصة «الحجرة» بحث جريءٌ عن معنىً للحياة "لو يصغي البشر إلى صوت قلوبهم، لما اضطروا إلى الكذب" وكأنه يومئ لقارئه كيف يتعامل مع الحياة وكيف يرضى بها ويعود للطريق الصحيح ويرمم أحلامه من جديد.
وهكذا بين البداية والنهاية حكايات ومشاهد اجتماعية حاول الروائي أن يقدم فيها تشكيلاً جديداً لإعادة صوغ الواقع أو عكسه أو محاكاته، هذا الواقع الذي لا نستطيع رؤيته من حيث إنه المتواري والمختبئ وراء الجدران نجح أسعد قطان في استنطاقه وكشفه عبر الفن القصصي لكي يحافظ على التوازن الدقيق بين الواقع والفكر، على صعوبة هذه المهمة.
