في روايته هذه، يعرض أكرم حوباني العالم أمام أعيننا بغموضه وهلاميته وعدم ترابطه، كما يعيد صياغة الذات في علاقتها بالماضي والحاضر في (وجوه لا نراها) كما يراها هو وكأننا أمام تجربة صوفية تُحل العالم في جسد المعبود "الحبيب" أو تختزل العالم في هذا العشق الأبدي.
في الخطاب الروائي يبدو "شادي" الذي فقد أباه بالموت، وغياب أمه بالمرض، ولاحقاً حبّه "أنغام" قد أصبح وجهاً لوجه مع الهزيمة؛ ينتشل من غيابات النسيان، وهمٌ، ينتزعه انتزاعاً من مخالب الواقع. فيجد في السفر خارج حدود المكان/ المعيش، مجالاً للبحث عن حياة أخرى، وبهذا يجسد الروائي في النص البعد النفسي للمكان مثلما أن للمشاعر والأحاسيس بعدها النفسي في الوعي كما يفصح في نفس الوقت عن موقف نفسي يؤثر في شخوص الرواية بقدر ما يكسب النص شاعريته ورسالته التي أراد إيصالها إلى القارئ: "نحنُ نحرّف الحياة عندما نجعلها تقف على فردٍ واحدٍ فقط..".
يقول الروائي في (وجوه لا نراها): "... عندما يستحيل الحنين حجم المسافة بين طرفي اللقاء الذي كان سيحدث لولا ظهور شبه الغياب في المنتصف، حينها قد لا ينفع سوى التحالف مع الزمان والمكان لتثبت الأشواق براءتها من جرم النسيان عن طريق تلك الأماكن التي كانت تشهد رغبة الوقوع في محراب أول رشفة من فنجان قهوة وسيجارة تبغ أمام ملامح عربية في بلدٍ عربي.
فالحياة هي تلك التي نتوهم بأن أطرافها قريبة. ونمكث كثيراً حتى نسد ضرائب العادات البدائية إليها. وصولاً بحقيقتنا إليها حين نبدو بين حدودها نرسم ونلون أهازيج اللقاء المؤبد بفرشاة ثنائية مسمّين قبل ذلك على أمل اللانشبع.
فالحياة هي إحاكة الحقيقة بخيوط الأمنيات".
