شهدت نهاية القرن التاسع عشر، حسب "إميل برهييه"، نهاية جميع الآمال الفلسفية، وكانت "العدمية" حسب "نيتشه"، هي النتيجة التي انتهت إليها المسيرة التاريخية للفلسفة الغربية. ومن ثم كانت هذه النهاية فاتحة لميلاد الفلسفة المعاصرة.
من هنا كانت الفلسفة المعاصرة قطعة من العدمية. وكلمة "عدمية" رغم أنها تشير إلى صفة "الانحلال" في الفلسفة المعاصرة، لا تعني أنه لا وجود لـ"حاضر" في الفلسفة. إنها تشير إلى أن الحاضر يتصل بالماضي، فألأسئلة الفلسفية، كما يقول "بوبنر"، لا تتساقط من السماء.
وهذا الكتاب يمكن اعتباره بمثابة مدخل إلى حاضر الفلسفة. والدراسات التي يشتمل عليها موزعة إلى قسمين: القسم الأول يهتم بتحليل بعض المشكلات الفلسفية، والقسم الثاني ينتقل بين الفلاسفة المعاصرين البارزين، ويلقي الضوء على وجهات نظرهم في السياسة، والفن، واللغة، والعلم.
وقد جاءت الدراسات التي هي في الأصل بحوث ومحاضرات، استجابة لدواع مختلفة، ولذلك فهي لا تسير على خط فكري واحد.
