يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى "أن يكون مدخلاً للفكر المعاصر"، يبحث في مشاكله العامة وأزماته الثقافية والفلسفية، ويطرح قضاياه الأساسية الساخنة.
من خلال مجموعة من المقالات، يولي الكاتب الأهمية إلى شرح مأزق العلمانية والأخلاقيات الغربية في فصل أول يقسّمه إلى ثلاثة أقسام. يخصص القسم الأول لنقد الحداثة وأفكارها، من خلال عرض وتحليل طرح الفيلسوف الألماني نيتشه للحداثة التي، بالنسبة إليه ليست بالضرورة "مرادفة للتقدم، أو قوة دافعة للتطور"، وللحضارة التي هي أيضاً "لا تمثل تطوراً مستمراً نحو الأحسن، أو في اتجاه مستقيم كما يعتقد الإنسان الحديث، أو يحب أن يعتقد". و"أن الإنسانية الحديثة هي الإنسانية التي صارت بلا هدف، والغارقة في الفوضى، والمهددة بالسقوط في العدمية. ولذلك فهي ليست هدفا وإنما معبراً، وليست نهاية وإنما تمهيداً لنوع انساني مغاير للإنسان الحديث".
يتضمن القسم الثاني دراسة للعلاقة بين العلمانية والدين في أوروبا، وانتقالها من الصراع إلى التفاهم، كما للشروط التي انتجت العلمانية، وللمشكلات التي أفرزتها والتوترات التي خلّفتها، وللمفارقة التي أوجدتها ومفادها أن في ازدياد العلمانية، ازدياد الحاجة للدين.
أزمة القيم ومأزق الأخلاقيات، تشكّل القسم الثالث، الذي يستعرض الدلائل والمؤشرات "التي تنذر بوجود أزمة عميقة في القيم الإنسانية الحالية"، ويطرح العلاقة الجدلية بين الإحساس بفقدان القيم، وبين فقدان قيمة الذات المسؤولة عنها.
أما القسم الثاني فيخصصه الكاتب لـ "جماليات الوجود"، في ثلاثة أقسام عن نظرية "الاستطيقا" أو الجمالية في الفن، فيشرح معناها ومراحلها التاريخية، وعن الاستطيقا الرقمية، بما يعني تأثر الابتكارات الفنية بالابتكارات التقنية الحديثة؛ وفصل عن الفلسفة والألوان، يبين تأثير اللون والدور الذي بات يلعبه "بنفس الدرجة مع الأشكال والإيقاعات، ولموقعه الذي أصبح "مكاناً مميزاً ومفضلا" لعلم الجمال.
يجد القارئ في هذا الكتاب مدخلا للفكر المعاصر ومجالاته، بانفتاح في الرؤية، وبمساهمة في التحليل وفي نقاش القضايا الثقافية والفلسفية، يلجه القارئ العام، كما المثقفين والطلاب، بمتعة وفائدة.
