يستكشف المؤلّف في فصول هذا الكتاب المفاهيم الرئيسة والمألوفة، وهي مفاهيم تستخدم يومياً لما تحمله من معانٍ، ولأنَّ علماء الأنثروبولوجيا يهتمّون بالأشياء اليومية، تبدأ أولى فصول الكتاب بالإهتمامات التأسيسية للأنثروبولوجيا نفسها، وهي الثقافة، ثم تنتقل إلى النظر في عدد صغير من المفاهيم الأخرى: كالحضارة، والقيم، والقيمة، والدم، والهوية، والسلطة، والعقل، والطبيعة.
تحوي هذه القائمة المفاهيم الأساسية، وإن استُبعدت منها مفاهيم مهمّة ومرتبطة بها مثل "المجتمع" و"السلطة"، لكن الهدفَ المُتوخَّى من هذا الكتاب ليس تقديمَ عرضٍ شاملٍ، بل النظر إليه كخريطة تحوي بعضَ معالم الوجيه التي يُفترض بها أن تعمل كدليل مفيد في حقل شاسع، هو حياتُنا التي تتحدّد دائماً على أساس أهمّية مراعاة حياة الآخرين.
فالأنثروبولوجيا ليست مجرّد نقد يشير فقط إلى الطرائق ذات الطبيعة الثقافية التي نفهم بها مصطلحاتنا بل إنها تشرح كيف ولماذا تُعتبر الثقافة أمراً أساسياً في تركيبتنا كبشر، فنحن لسنا أناساً آليّين، ولا نخضع لقوةِ "الطبيعة البشرية"، كما إننا لسنا نتاجات بسيطة لجيناتنا؛ بل نحن نصنع خياراتنا بأنفسنا.
