يقول "ستيف هاكنك" إن كشف سر الوجود يحتاج إلى نظرية واضحة يفهمها كل إنسان لافئة معينة، عندئذ يقف الإنسان على سر الوجود ولغز الخليقة. ولكن مثل هذه النظرية التي يأمل البروفيسور في الوصول إليها مسألة رياضية بحتة لا حل لها مطلقاً. لأن المعرفة الكاملة تبقى أبداً أملاً مأمولاً دون أن يتحقق لأن قدراً من عدم اليقين يظل دوماً يطلل الحقيقة ولا يصل إليه العقل مهما بذل. أي تبقى المعرفة دائماً غامضة أو نسبية ولا تصل مطلقاً إلى درجة اليقين. لأن العقل الذي يفكر بطريقة علمية أي بتدقيق الملاحظات واستنتاج فرضية منها ثم تجريب الفرضية للوصول إلى نظرية إنما يفكر بطريقة بطيئة غري أكيدة يستوعب بالتدرج ولا يحصل أي تغير إلا على مهل لأن الوقائع الجديدة لا تدفع بسهولة إلى تغيير أسلوب التفكير... فيستغرق التغيير زمناً يتوقف على مدى تقبل العقل وعلى ندى استقرار النفس. إن هذا الكون لا صدى له.. ولا مركز. لا يرجع فيه الصوت إلى المكان والذي صدر منه.. لأنه يضيع في المتاهات السحيقة. كما أنه من المستحيل تحديد موقع معين واعتباره مركزاً.. لأن الكون لا يعرف من أين بدأ ولا أين ينتهي. إنه صمت مطبق إلى الأبد، في هذا الإطار يأتي الكتاب الذي بين يدينا "الكون وسحر الحياة" والذي يروي حكاية المادة منذ أن وجدت وحتى تحولت على الأرض إلى كائن كله سحر وألغاز.
