لقد حدثت أعمال تمرد غيرت مسار التاريخ، ومثلت نقطة تحول مهمة. زلازل ثورية هزت العالم. لم يعد کوکبنا بعدها كما كان. لقد ترك لنا أنصار الملوك والثوريون شواهد مکتوبة تعبر عن آرائهم السياسية. وأنتج لنا معاصرو هذه الأحداث فيضاً من الوثائق. لكن نتاجاتهم سرعان ما خضعت للتدقيق. وكما هو الحال في معظم فترات التاريخ البشري الحاسمة، فإن التواريخ هي الشئ الوحيد المؤكد. نحن متأكدون أن سكان باریس اقتحموا الباستيل في 14 تموز ۱۷۸۹. هذه الحقيقة تنتمي إلى التاريخ. أما بقية ما حدث فيمكن أن يكون قريبا من الحقيقة. إن عدد الذين أدين لهم لتقديمهم المشورة والمعلومات التاريخية يمثل رقماً كبيراً يكاد يكون مساوياً النطاق الأحداث التي أصفها. وبالنسبة للأحداث المعاصرة، فاني أشيد بكل الامتنان للمساعدة التي قدمها شهود العيان من خلال السماح لي بالاطلاع على قصصهم وملاحظاتهم. وفي معظم الحالات لم أذكر أسماءهم بناء على طلبهم الخاص. الكثير منهم كان لديهم وجهات نظر مختلفة عن وجهة نظري، ولكنها ساهمت كثيراً في فهمي للأحداث. أشكرهم جميعا. أنا لا أدعي التنافس مع الخبراء، أو التوصل إلى حكم قاطع لا يمكن أن يقدمه سوى التاريخ نفسه. واذا ما تحدثت عما سيجده القارئ في صفحات هذا الكتاب فلن يجد سوى فضولي، ودهشتي، أو حتى سذاجتي. بالنسبة للأحداث التي شهدتها فرنسا أجريت بحثا في الأرشيفات الضخمة التي تزخر بها مدينة باريس Ville de Paris . أما فيما يخص أندرياس هوفر وبانشو فيلا فقد قمت برحلات إلى بلدانهم. بالنسبة للفصل المتعلق بأكتوبر الأحمر، تمكنت من الاعتماد على المساعدة التي لا تقدر بثمن من أحد المصادر الروسية مع إمكانية الاطلاع مؤخراً على وثائق أرشيف جهاز المخابرات السوفيتية KGB . كانت المادة المتعلقة بسقوط القيصر مأخوذة من معهد ألمانيا التاريخي. فيما يتعلق بعملية فالكيري Walkire فإن أفراداً من عائلتي كانوا معاصرين لها. استندت في معلوماتي عن حركة التمرد في طوكيو على حكايات الناجين منها، وفي قصة تشي غيفارا المأساوية على ملاحظاتي الشخصية. فيما يتعلق بالثورة الإيرانية فقد ساهم معارف لي من إيران بقصصهم بالإضافة إلى فترات إقامتي المختلفة في إيران قبل وأثناء وبعد الثورة، بما في ذلك المقابلات مع الشاه وآية الله الخميني .
