هبطت طائرة «السوبر فورترس »، بلونها الفضي الغامق، إحدى طائرات التشكيل 509 في أسطول الجوّ الأميركي العشرين، ولم تكن تحمل قنابل ولا وسائل دمار أخرى، بل أعين اثني عشر رجلاً، ومع ذلك فقد كانت هي المسؤولة عن مصرع أكثر من 100 ألف مدني. أقلعت، بعد ثلاثين دقيقة، من المدرّج نفسه طائرة تحمل الرقم 82 وعلى ذيلها حرف R داخل دائرة صغيرة، تحت قمرة الطيار، وفوق علامة مسجّلة، كُتب إينولا غاي الاسم الأول لوالدة الطيار، الكولونيل بول. و. تيبيت في سلاح الجوّ الأميركي. كانت طائرته هذه تحمل قنبلة هائلة. عندما حلّق تيبيت وطاقمه المكوّن من اثني عشر رجلاً، كان مزوّداً بأربعة أهداف محتملة. وتعليمات الجنرال توماس. ت. هاندي، محدّدة جداً: «.... إنّ إلقاء القنبلة الخاصة على هدف يتوقّف على جودة الأحوال الجويّة، ويجب رميها على أحد الأهداف التالية: «كوكوران نيجاتا، هيروشيما، ناغازاكي.. في السابعة واثنتين وأربعين دقيقة من صباح السادس من آب عام 1945 ، وبينما كان تيبيت يمضي بطائرته على علو 26 ألف قدمٍ فوق المحيط الهادئ، تلقّى رسالة مشفّرة من طائرة الاستطلاع التي سبقت طائرته بثلاثين دقيقة، مفادها أن أحد الأهداف تحجبه الغيوم، الثاني لا يكاد يُرى. لكن ثمة هدفاً واضحاً جداً. فاستدارت القاذفة إلى الهدف الأخير بعد تلقيها رسالة: «الغيوم تغطي ثلاثة أعشاره. أنصحك أن تطلق عليه أولاً .» بنزوة من الطبيعة اختيرت مدينة لقدرها. فكانت هيروشيما أوّل مدينة تُقصف. كنت في الثامنة من عمري عندما عاد أبي ذات يوم مشمس من شهر أيلول، وقال لي: «لقد أعلن هتلر الحرب ». أنا أعرف هتلر، رأيته في رينسجتر عندما دخل منتصراً إلى فيينا - بلدي الأصلي – لكن لا أعرف الحرب. فسألت والدي: « ما هي الحرب يا أبي؟ .» عرفت الحرب منذ ذلك اليوم الخريفي من عام 1939 ، بدءاً، كنت أرتجف خوفاً من مخزن الفحم، بينما الطائرات تقصف مدينتي وبيتي وعائلتي. بعدئذ، وحين ارتبطت حياتي كلّها بالحرب على نحو يتعذّر تفسيره، ما فَتِئْتُ أُرسَل من حرب إلى أخرى، على مدى ثلاثين عاماً. فأتيح لي رؤية رجال حمقى مثل هتلر، عن قرب. قد توجد حروب عادلة، غير أني لم أشهد واحدة لم تنته بآلام مهولة.
