حدث التغيير بفعل حرب لم يقاتل فيها العراقيون اعتقاداً منهم باستحالة القتال، ورغبة من غالبيتهم في التخلص من ضغوط الحروب التي أقحموا فيها قسراً لعشرات السنين، وحصلت بسببه تطورات لم تكن محسوبة تماماً لدعاته والمتفرجين، فالديمقراطية أنتجت فوضى قوضت أعمدتها الرئيسية، والحرية كونت تمرداً حرف الجمهور عن الحياة الاعتيادية، والانفتاح أدخل من في المحيط ساحة القتال الداخلية، ومحاربة الإرهاب أقحمت الإسلام طرفاً في القضية، والأمل بحياة أفضل بعد قهر السنين تحول إلى يأس من استمرار الحياة مثل باقي البشرية. وبالمحصلة أو بعد أربع سنوات من حدوثه وجدت جميع الأطراف المعنية بالوضع العراقي من عرب ومسلمين، وأمريكان محتلين، وعراقيين مؤيدين ومعارضين أنهم في محنة أو دوامات محنة لا يعرف فيها القاتل والمقتول، ولا الدافع إلى القتل على الهوية، ولا تفهم وسطها الأهداف والاتجاهات، ولا الغايات البعيدة والقريبة ولا جدوى الاستمرار بذات الطريق لتحقيقها، ولا يعي السائرون في فلكها والمشاركون في أحداثها كيفية الخروج من وسطها بسلام، فكانت دوامات محنة وإن هدأت سرعة دورانها بعد سنين من الآن سيجد المشاركون فيها والقائمون عليها أنهم دفعوا الثمن تغييراً في أوضاعهم وأسلوب حياتهم، وشكل أهدافهم القريبة والبعيدة. وهذا الكتاب الذي أخذ عنوانه من ركام هذه المحنة يتناول أحداثها بالشرح والتحليل من وجهتي نظر سياسية تتعلق بالاحتلال والإدارة وأسلوب الحكم، ونفسية ذات صلة بالنوايا والدوافع والأسباب في محاولة من شاهد عاش أحداثها أن يقدم شهادته موثقة عسى أن تسهم مع غيرها مع إزالة العتمة والتسريع بالخروج من دوامتها المهلكة.
