في صيف عام 2004 انتقلت إلى الدوحة للعمل في شبكة الجزيرة، وخلال عملي في هذه المؤسسة أوفدت مرتين إلى الخارج، أولاهما كانت في آذار مارس 2005 لتغطية القمة العربية التي استضافتها الجزائر. والثانية في صيف العام التالي إلى الصومال، وبما أن اقتصار مهمتي في الرحلة الأولى على متابعة حدث يجري داخل القاعات والفنادق، كان من البديهي ألا أتمكن من الإطلاع عن كثب على الجزائر، أو التعرف على الجزائريين. أما في رحلتي إلى الصومال فقد كان الأمر مختلفاً تماماً. فقد أقمت في الصومال أثنا عشر يوماً، وتنقلت داخل مقديشو، والتقيت عدد من رجال المحاكم وشيوخها. وتعرفت أيضاً بأساتذة جامعيين وصحفيين، ورعاة مدارس دينية، وبعض نواب الحكومة الانتقالية، الذين أتوا إليها من بيداوا لزيارة أقاربهم بتأثير الطمأنينة السائدة في المدينة. كما زرت لمرة واحدة معسكراً للاجئين. وخلال فترة إقامتي، كانت نذر الحرب بين المحاكم، والقوات الإثيوبية قد بدأت بالظهور، حدث ذلك عند إعلان رئيس مجلسها التنفيذي شريف شيخ أحمد -خلال وجودي- الجهاد ضد القوات الإثيوبية، وتطورت التهديدات بعد مغادرتي إلى عمليات عسكرية، ومواجهات، واندفعت المحاكم لخوض مغامرتها العسكرية مع إثيوبيا متأثرة بالسهولة التي سيطرت فيها على معظم أراضي الصومال. وما هي إلا أسابيع، حتى كانت سلطة المحاكم قد إنهارت، وغادر قادتها عاصمة الصومال إلى كيسمايو جنوب غرب البلاد، ثم إلى المنافي.
