يطرح د. شلدن كاشدان/ أستاذ علم النفس في جامعة ماساتشوستس في هذا الكتاب تحليلاً رائعاً لكيفية ضرب الحكايا الخيالية على أوتار هموم الأطفال الأساسية، ويبرز في الوقت ذاته الدور الذي تلعبه الشخصيّات أو الأشياء الرمزية، مثل الحذاء الزجاجي، وبيوت كعك الزنجبيل، وزوجات الآباء الشريرات وسحرهن وشعوذتهن، في حبك تلك الحكايات وبنائها، كما يُظهر المؤلف كيف تختلف حكايا الساحرات من ثقافة إلى ثقافة، وكيف تتحول تلك الحكايا الخيالية الكلاسيكية إلى أجواء "ديزني" التجارية، والسبب الذي يجعل لتلك الحكايا تأثير استسلامي غريب على القراء من كبار السّن؛ حين يُبدون إعجابهم واهتمامهم بها، كما هو تأثيره على بقية الفئات العمرية وخاصة الأطفال حين تروى لهم وينصتون بإعجاب شديد لها.
وفي هذا السياق يعالج المؤلف "باقة الأسئلة الأبدية": لماذا أكلت أميرة الثلج الأبيض التفاحة المسمومة؟ لماذا تكون زوجة الأب وضيعة بتلك الدرجة القاسية؟ ولماذا يتغيّب والد سندريلا عندما تكون هي بأمسّ الحاجة إليه؟
مارس المؤلف كاشدان التدريس في عدد من الجامعات الشهيرة في الولايات المتحدة كان آخرها جامعة ماساتشوستس في مدينة آمهرست. كما واصل عمله كمحلل نفسي لعدد من السنوات خلال عمله كأستاذ جامعي. وكتابه هذا يتألف من اثني عشر فصلاً ومقدمة صغيرة، ويغطي مواضيع شتى تمتد من الحكايا الخيالية والخرافية والسحرية إلى الأساطير إلى أدب الأطفال إلى الفلكلور وجمعه وتدوينه إلى نظريات التحليل النفسي وتطبيقاتها.... ولا سيما عند فرويد وآخرون يختلف معهم مثل عالم النفس برونو بيتلهايم، كما يبدي رأيه في أعمال فنيّة تناولت حكايا الساحرات.
