تعد مرحلة الطفولة مرحلة هامة وحاسمة في حياة الفرد ففيها تنمو شخصيته وتتشكل وتتفتح معالمها وتبرز ملامحها في جميع جوانبها الجسمية والعقلية والوجدانية والحلقية.
فمن خلالها يتضح السواء والإضطراب، فإذا نشأ الطفل في بيئة أسرية مستقرة يسودها الحب والوفاء العاطفي بين أفرادها، ويستخدم فيها الآباء أساليب سوية إيجابية في تنشئة أبنائهم تمتع بحياة سعيدة خالية من التوتر والتأزم النفسي متحرراً من المشكلات والإضطرابات النفسية لأنه يجد في هذه البيئة السند والأمن والطمأنينة الإنفعالية، كما يشعر فيها بذاته وكيانه ويشبع حاجاته ويحقق مطالب المرحلة النمائية التي يعيشها.
أما إذا نشأ الطفل في بيئة أسرية متصدعة مفككة خالية من الحب والتبادل الوجداني بين أفرادها، ويميل فيها الآباء إلى إستخدام أساليب غير سوية في تنشئة الأبناء كالنبذ والإكراه والقسوة والتفرقة وعدم إحترام ذاتية الأبناء والتدليل والرعاية الزائدة، كان الطفل عرضة للإضطرابات السلوكية والمشكلات النفسية نتيجة الجو الأسري الذي يعيش فيه، ومن ثم لا يقوى على مواجهة الإحباطات لضعف الأنا لديه وعدم قدرته على تحقيق مطالب المرحلة النمائية التي يعيشها.
ونتيجة لذلك فلقد عرض المؤلف بإسلوب سهل ومبسط المشكلات السائقة التي يعاني منها الأطفال وكذلك لمعرفة أسبابها ومداها وتأثيرها على صحة الطفل النفسية ثم قدم طرق العلاج اللازمة وفقاً لطبيعة كل مشكلة، ووفقاً لمبادئ تعديل السلوك بفنياته المختلفة اللازمة للتعامل مع السلوك المشكل.
