وإن أهم وسيلة تفضي لابتكار شخصيات فعّالة، هي في تعلّم "كيف تكون ثلاثة أشخاص في وقت واحد: الكاتب، والشخصية والقارئ"، تعيش جميعها أثناء الكتابة في حالات ذهنية متعاقبة، وستنمو البراعة أو القدرة على تنفيذ ذلك شيئاً فشيئاً مع الممارسة وتقدم العمل.
مع تركيزها على الأمور المتعلقة ببناء الشخصية وأنواعها، من العشّاق إلى روّاد السفن الفضائية، وتحديدها، وكيفية إعطاء الأهمية للانطباع الأولي عنها، وتغيّرها، وفصل الدرامية منها عن الهزلية وعن تلك ذات الدوافع المعقدة وغيرها، تضم الدراسة إجابات على كل الأسئلة المتعلقة بصناعة الرواية، مثل استعمال الاستعارة لوصف المشاعر، إدخال عنصر الإحباط "أنفع العواطف في الرواية"، وكيفية استعمال الحوار والأفكار، وإنتاج الحالات الخاصة في العاطفة كالحب والشجار والموت، إلى تأثير ومفعول استعمال ضمير المتكلم، وضمير الغائب، و"الضمير الرابع" الذي يربط الخيوط ببعضها، إلى ما هنالك من ملاحظات وتعليقات ونصائح مفيدة ومعرفة قيّمة يحصل عليها الراوي مختصراً الوقت والجهد والتجربة. تضم الدراسة المنهجية أيضاً تمارين تفاعلية مباشرة تلي الموضوع المطروح مباشرة، ومقتطفات وأمثلة ومقاطع من الروايات الأكثر شهرة في العالم.
النصيحة الأخيرة التي تقدمها الكاتبة في هذا الكتاب المدروس والمفيد والممتع في قراءته وفي بحثه ومنهجه، تقول: "أكبر مساعدة تقدمها لنفسك ككاتب هي اعتبار الرواية قصة الشخصيات لا قصّتك". فالقرّاء "يريدون رؤية أشخاص مثيرين للاهتمام يعيشون في قصصهم".
