تتخذ الرواية من "مركز فيوليت للتجميل"، إطاراً لعرض النماذج والحالات التي يؤول إليها البشر، في مجتمع تتعرض فيه القيم الحقيقية إلى حالة من الزيف، وتلتبس عليه المقاييس.
"نرجس" تقوم بتجميل النساء، وبوضع المساحيق والطلاء على وجوههن، فتحولهن إلى جميلات وجّذابات. ونتيجة لمراقبتها الدائمة ودقتها في ملاحظة الوجوه التي باتت هي من يحدد ملامحها ويشكّل خطوطها، لم تحصل على الخبرة فقط في تجميل هذه الوجوه ومعرفة خفاياها، بل أصبح لديها فلسفتها الخاصة: "لا تدع الدنيا تمكيجك.. مكيجيها أنت واختاري أجمل ما فيها..".
ولأنها عرفت قيمة الجمال الذي تضفيه على وجوه الفتيات اللواتي يتحولن إلى فاتنات، بمجرد إضفاء لمسة من ريشتها الفنانة، أو من جراء محوها لتجاعيد الزمن، أو بسبب نجاحها في إخفاء علامة من علامات القبح، إستنتجت أن ذلك سيجعل منها عنصراً هاماً في تحريك الأحداث. هي التي تمنح الحب والسعادة، وهي صانعة هذا الجمال الذي يقع أسيره الرجال. صحيح أن مهنتها إسعاد الآخرين إلا أنها لا تستطيع إسعاد نفسها. تعرف كيفية صنع القناع الجميل لكنها أيضا تعلم كيف تزيله. أصبح لها نظرة ثاقبة بالجميع، نساءً ورجالاً، ومجرد إلتفاتة منها تكفي لكشف ما يلتمع في صدورهم، وما يدور في دواخلهم. فـ"خلف الشخصيات الوقورة والهامات العالية" التي يظهر بها الرجال، غالباً ما كانت تجد نفوساً ضعيفة، تنهار بسهولة أمام سلطة الجمال، فتنحدر وينحدر معها العديد من الضحايا.
فكرة القناع الذي تصنعه مستحضرات التجميل حقيقة، اعتمدتها الرواية أيضاً، رمزاً يدل على الفساد الفعلي في المجتمع، والذي يخفيه أصحابه بالأقنعة الجميلة.
