تدور أحداث هذه الرواية في السلمانية وهي حارة مصرية من حارات منطقة السويس. قبل حرب عام 67، كانت الحياة فيها روتينية وعادية، تجري أحداثها وكأنها شريط سينمائي يعيد نفسه كل يوم. نفس المشاحنات والمعاكسات، ونفس التحرشات الصبيانية التي تجري في الأزقة الفقيرة، الضيقة والقديمة.
أسرة محمود القاضي تعيش في السلمانية، في بيت عتيق يضم جميع أفرادها الذين تربوا على المبادئ والقيم الراسخة الأصيلة التي بقيت ثابتة لا تمس بالنسبة إليهم. وبالرغم من أن لكل منهم عمله وعالمه الخاص، إلا أنهم حافظوا منذ عهد بعيد، على اجتماعهم عند محمود. كانوا يتحلقون جالسين بشكل شبه دائرة، وينتظرونه كي يلقي على مسامعهم حكاية من "حكايات ألف ليلة وليلة"، أو من "حكايات سندباد". تقع حرب حزيران عام 1967، تأتي الصدمة لتغّير كل شيئ. تتغير الوجوه، بات يكسوها الحزن والخجل واليأس، وتعلوها الدموع. ساد الظلام وعم الصمت، وانتكست النفوس.
تصوّر الرواية في صدق وبساطة وشاعرية اختلاف هاتين المرحلتين، ووقع نتائج نكسة حرب 67 الفاصلة، والتي عادت على الإنسان المصري بشكل خاص، وعلى العربي بشكل عام، بالإحباط الذي حّول مجرى تركيبته وعنفوانه، وسجن أمله في التغيير، ومحا إمكانية الحفاظ على عزة النفس والكرامة التي وعد بها. وإذا كان هذا حال المدنيين، فكيف يمكن أن يكون وقع هذه النكسة على الجنود المحاربين العائدين وغير الإبهين بالطبع لاهتزاز القطار وارتجاجه، "فهّزات القطار لا تساوي شيئا أمام هزات القدر".
