حيوات تاريخية" كتاب للشاعر والناقد الأدبي المعروف "إسكندر حبش" يشكل بمجمله قراءات في روايات معاصرة، هي متابعات للأدب الأجنبي – الروائية منها بخاصة – يرتحل بها "حبش" عبر الأساليب والمناخات والفضاءات المتنوعة، لكل كاتب على حدة. فيقدم لنا مادة نقدية معرفية تنبثق عنها اللحظة الإبداعية.. وبمعنى آخر يقول الكاتب: "من هنا، لا بد لي من القول، إن المتابعات والقراءات هذه، تُشكل بدورها سفراً في "خرائطية" الرواية الأجنبية المعاصرة، لأكتشف هذه العوالم بدوري. هو اكتشاف إذاً، وأشدد على هذه الكلمة، لكي أصل إلى الفكرة التالية، وهي الفكرة التي جعلتها حاضرة في "حكاية الحكايات" أو "مديح اللامرئي": لا أكتب "النقد" بالمعنى الأكاديمي للكلمة. لم أكن مرة مشدوداً إليه، بل تأخذني الكتابة "المتفلتة" من كلِّ ضوابط، في كثير من الأحيان، مثلما تأخذني الكتابة التي تحاول في كل مرة أن تعيد اكتشاف أدواتها (...) هو كتاب قراءات إذاً، (...) من هنا، أحب أن أصف "حيوات ميتافيزيقية، حيوات تاريخية" بأنه كتاب متابعات، ولكنها متابعات تحاول أن تذهب إلى الداخل أكثر، بمعنى أنها لا تريد أن تقف عند حدود العرض المجرد، بل ترغب أن تقدم لمحة أكبر عن سيرة الكاتب كما عن بعض أعماله وإن كانت تنطلق من كتاب واحد، أقصد أن السبب في تناول هذا الكتاب أو ذاك، قراءة لرواية له صدرت حديثاً، لتقود إلى إطلالة شبه بانورامية، على الأقل هذه هي رغبتها الدفينة...". يضم هذا الكتاب مجموعة قراءات لروايات تصدر الآن عن أكثر من دار نشر، سواء أكانت بلغة أجنبية أم ترجمات لروايات أجنبية إلى العربية، ومن هذه الروايات التي ألقى الكاتب الأضواء عليها نذكر: عتمات التاريخ الأوروبي: أنطونيو تابوكي (إيطاليا)، ذكريات المتخيل.. مونولوغات الأقدار أنطونيو لوبو أنطونيش (البرتغال)، تحت الظلام الإيديولوجي: خالد حسيني (أفغانستان)، سر أوشفيتز: إيمري كيرتيش (المجر)، أوهام النظام الفيتنامي: دونغ ثوهيونغ (فيتنام)... إلى آخر ذلك من عناوين شكلت قراءة المؤلف ومتابعاته لأهم ما يصدر من أعمال لروائيين أجانب معاصرين، فكان "حبش" خير من كتب عنهم وخير من أبدع...
