هذا سِفرٌ بديعٌ يمزجُ فيه "وليد مكي" بين أدب الرحلات والتوثيق التاريخي، ويُقدم للباحثين والمُهتمين جانبًا مُهمًّا من معالم الصحراء الشرقية وسيرتها، وعلى خُطى الرحّالة العرب، يرتحلُ إلى المنطقة الحدودية بين مصر والسودان، باحثًا عن أقدام دبّت على دروب الصحراء الوعرة، ووجوه صهرتها شمسُ الحياة البكر.
خلال الرحلة، يُقدم الكاتب معلومات عن قُرى جنوبية، ويسرد سيرة الأمكنة في مَرسى عَلم، وحلايب وشلاتين، وأبو رماد، وحماطة، وغيرها، حتى إذا حطَّ رِحاله في وادي حميثرة جنوب مَرسى عَلم، بزغت سيرة القطب الصوفي أبي الحسن الشاذلي المدفون في هذه البقعة من الصحراء.
وتأتي هذه الرحلة في توقيت حساس؛ إذ نحتاج بشدة إلى ترسيخ الهُوية عَبْر التجوال في ربوع الوطن للكشف عن الكنوز المخبوءة تاريخًا وتراثًا إنسانيًّا.
