وصل قطنبة مشارف أصفون فبان له أن المماليك قد دنسوها؛ نُصبت الرنوك على مصاطب حشوها بجماجم القتلى، حطموا أبواب الدور وأفرغوا بطونها خارجها . نهبوا ما ينفعهم، وما دون ذلك اكتظت به الدروب مع الناس الذين لا هم عراة ولا هم مستورين. كل هذه الأمارات دلته على أن المماليك مروا من هنا. مشاعل الدروب موقدة، غير أن أضواءها قد شُبعت بحزن دفين. الوجوه مشوبة بانكسار يظللها؛ انكسار الأحدب وجيش العربان، وانكسار ذواتهم وذهاب أمانيهم. نواح من النسوة يطغى على الدروب من الدور، صخب كطنين النحل من الصبية الذين أفزعتهم الدوشة، والرجال فالصمت يجللهم. السؤال الذي يخنقهم ولا ينطقونه : لماذا هُزمنا ؟
