عندما شاهد ماثيو آرنات سحابة الموت للمرة الأولى، كانت تطفو خارج نافذة الطابق الأول لمنزل مجاورٍ لمكان إقامته. كان يحث الخطى على امتداد الشارع الرئيسي في سوق بلدة فارنهايم، باحثاً عن أي فاكهة أو كِسَرِ خبز أوقعها عابر سبيل غير متيقظ. كان يُفترض بعينَيه أن تتفحصا الأرض بدقة، ولكنه واصل النظر إلى المنازل والمتاجر وإلى الناس المحتشدين حوله. إنه في الرابعة عشر من العمر فقط، ولا يذكر أبداً قيامه بزيارة بلدة بهذا الحجم من قبل. في هذا القسم المزدهر من فارنهايم، تبدو المباني الخشبية القديمة منحنية فوق الشارع بغُرفها العُليا التي تلوح كسُحُب صَلبة فوق كل الأشخاص تحتها.

حين يموت شخصان محليان بسبب أعراض شبيهة بأعراض الطاعون، يبدأ شارلوك تحرياته عن سبب موتهما الحقيقي. وبمساعدة أستاذه الجديد الأميركي أميوس غروي له، يبدأ خطواته الأولى في مجال التحقيقات؛ فيكتشف جرائم يقوم بها شخص غدّار ونذل وشرير بطريقة لامعة مدفوعاً بنوايا سيئة.
- أندرولين كاتب وصحفي. كان طوال حياته من المعجبين بشخصية شارلوك هولمز. شغفه بالروايات الأصلية التي ألفها السير آرثر كونان دويل، وعزمه على ابتكار شخصية شارلوك هولمز في سن المراهقة، مكّناه من العمل على إرث كونان دويل، لإعادة إحياء شخصية المحقق الأكثر شهرة في العالم؛ ولكن كشاب في سن المراهقة. لقد لاقى عمله نجاحاً تجارياً كبيراً ونال إشادة النقاد. يعيش أندرولين في دورست مع زوجته وولده.
تتألف سلسلة كتب "الشاب شارلوك هولمز" من الروايات الآتية: "سحابة الموت"، "نيران التمرّد"، "الجليد الأسود"، "عاصفة اللهب"، "لدغة الأفعى"، "حد السكين" و"برودة القمر".
