منذ عتبة العنوان الأولى «كوكب الكافيين» يدرك القارئ أن الروائي منصور الحمدان أراد به الإشارة الواضحة إلى أن روايته هذه قد تحدث في أكثر من مدينة، وفي أكثر من بلد في الشرق الأوسط، ما يعني أنهُ مكان مركّب يشكّل فضاءً روائياً مناسباً للأحداث التي تدور فيه، ومكاناً ذا مضمون أيديولوجي يقظ يترك بصمته في الشخصيات التي تقطنه ويرسم مواقفها ومصائرها أيضاً، والروائي يفعل ذلك من خلال بطل الحكاية "الصحفي التائه" الذي نشأ في العاصمة في حيٍّ قديم مشرف على البحر وليس له منه إلاَّ غرفة يقطنها فوق السطوح تتوسط الأبراج العالية والفاخرة؛ له آراؤه وفلسفته الخاصة في كل ما يجري حوله في العمل والحياة ولذلك اختار أن يبتعد عن كوكب الصحافة والإعلام حيث كان يعمل في "جريدة المحيط" ويختار حياة أخرى أكثر هدوءاً قوامها التخفي والتقية ونسيان الماضي بعد أن عجز أن يغير شيئاً.وعبر هذا الخطاب يطرح الروائي الحمدان هموم وشجون الإعلام وغزو العالم الرقمي له وتأثيره على مصادر المعلومات والإعلانات والرأي والرأي الآخر والنقد الساخر والنقد البناء "نهاية الرأي الأوحد" ثم المصادر المشبوهة للتمويل وتأثيرها على سياسة الجرائد وفقدان الجرائد تراثها العريق وتقليل الصفحات والسير باتجاه الطبعة الألكترونية وغيرها من قضايا شائكة.من أجواء الرواية نقرأ:"... - عرفتك أيها المتخفّي..- برقوق الرسام يحفظ الملامح والخطوط الرئيسية.. ابتسم وأشعل سيجاراً وسألتهُ:- أخبار الجريدة؟- يبحثون عنك.- ضعوا صورتي في قسم التائهين..- هل عرفت صاحبَ المازيراتي؟ إنهُ المُعلن الرئيس، يدفع رواتبنا، غاضبٌ من رابح، وضع إعلان أحذية مخفّضة بجانب صورة سيارته الفاخرة.- رابح لا يتوب.- لقد طردوه، يبحثون عن موظفين، الدكتور صادق يريدك في قسم الإعلان.- وهل يتذكرني؟- يعرف كل شيء عنك، وأين تسكن، وأين تشرب قهوتك.- كوكب صغير.- إنهُ ينتظر جواباً..- لا أعرف، لا جواب لديّ، سوف أسافر بعيداً في رحلة طويلة..- لكل رحلة نهاية..- و.. بداية..".
