تعرض رواية «وحده الوقت يكشف الحقيقة» شخصيات فذة صمدت بعد الحرب العالمية الأولى وحتى اندلاع الحرب العالمية الثانية، حين توجب على هاري تقرير ما إذا كان يريد التسجيل في جامعة أوكسفورد، أو الانضمام إلى القتال ضد قوات هتلر.
بفضل براعة جيفري أرشر في التأليف، يأخذك الكتاب في رحلة لا تريدها أن تنتهي، حتى بعدما تقلب آخر صفحة من صفحات هذه الرواية التي لا تُنسى؛ لأنك ستواجه معضلة لم تتوقعها، لا أنت ولا هاري كليفتون نفسه.

ولد آرثر كليفتون في ستيل هاوس لاين؛ تماماً مثلي. حتى إننا ذهبنا إلى المدرسة نفسها؛ ابتدائية ميريوود، ولكنني كنت أصغر منه بعامين فلم يعرف حتى بوجودي. كل الفتيات في صفي أغرمن به، وليس السبب فقط أنه "كابتن" فريق كرة القدم في المدرسة. ورغم أن آرثر لم يظهر قط أي اهتمام بي حين كُنت في المدرسة، إلاّ أن الأمر تبدّل سريعاً بعد أن عاد من الجبهة الغربية (ويسترن فرونت). ولست واثقة من أنه عرف فعلاً من أكون حين طلب مني الرقص معه ليلة السبت تلك في "القصر". ولكن، لأكون عادلة، توّجب عليّ النظر إليه مرتين للتعرف إليه؛ لأنه امتلك شاربين رفيعين وأرجع شعره إلى الخلف مثل رونالد كولمان. لم ينظر إلى أية فتاة أخرى تلك الليلة، وبعدما رقصنا رقصة الفالز الأخيرة عرفتُ أنها مسألة وقت فقط قبل أن يطلبني للزواج...".
