رواية بعد أخرى يُدخل الكاتب فراس عوض الله قارئه في عالم الجريمة الغامضة ويشركه في حلّ ألغازها؛ وهذه المرة يعيد إلى أبطاله مواقف عصيبة كانوا قد مروا بها ولا تزال تلاحقهم فجاء عنوان الرواية «أوراق الماضي وقضايا أخرى» بمثابة المفتاح الذي يربط النص بشخصياته الروائية التي شهدناها في الرواية الأولى «السّم الكلامي» والرواية الثانية «قصر الدم وقضايا أخرى»، وأكثرها حضوراً في النص هي شخصية "هيرشار" شارلوك هولمز الرواية والذي سيقوم كعادته بمساعدة الشرطة وصديقه مايكل بحلّ ألغاز الجرائم واكتشاف مجرميها في هذه الرواية أيضاً.. فبعد عدة أيام من انتهاء قضية اتهام "كريس" بقتل زوجة جارها الطبيب، كما ورد في الرواية الثانية للكاتب «قصر الدم وقضايا أخرى»؛ وقيام "مايكل" بإنقاذها قبل مجيء هيرشار إلى المكان، عولجت "كريس" في المستشفى وغادرتها بينما ألقي القبض على الطبيب والسكرتيرة... ولكن القصة مع "كريس" لم تنتهِ عند هذا الحدث فما تزال حياتها في بؤرة الخطر. إذ تتعرض للخطف مرة أخرى من قبل مجرم مهووس كانت قد رفضت حبّه منذ سنتين فخطط للانتقام منها ومن الشاب الذي أنقذها.. وكانت خطته تقضي باتصال كريس بمايكل والطلب منه تنفيذ "أمر" إذا ما أراد إنقاذ فتاته والأمر هو: الذهاب إلى "قصر الجحيم" وحلّ لغز يؤدي إلى العثور على نقود يأتي الخاطف بها؛ و"اللغز هو، عند الالتقاء بالستّة والستّين، حرك ملعباً بستة قرابين، H to the right and C, X to the left". وهكذا ينطلق مايكل وهيرشار إلى قصر الجحيم ويكون عليهما قراءة سلسلة من الشيفرات الغامضة وفهمها قبل حلّ اللغز وإنقاذ كريس...
