في كتاب »قَطر: التطور التأريخي وقيام الإمارة« (1517-1916) يبحث الدكتور صبري فالح الحمدي في التطورات السياسية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية التي شهدتها دولة »قطر« عبر تاريخها الحديث والمعاصر، بغية الكشف عن الظروف التي رافقت نشأتها بما في ذلك أوضاعها الداخلية وعلاقاتها الخارجية على مدى تاريخها الطويل وإلى اليوم.
يقول المؤلف عن كتابه هذا: "هذا الكتاب يتضمن دراسة علمية اعتمدت منهجية البحث العلمي لجوانب من تاريخ قطر الحديث، الذي اكتنفته أحداث كثيرة مرّت بها منطقة الخليج العربي، وكانت قطر جزءاً منها، لارتباطها الجغرافي والتأريخي في تطوراتها السياسية والاقتصادية، لكن ما يميز قطر على الرغم من صغر المساحة وقلة عدد السكان، تردّد اسمها في المصادر المختلفة من وثائق وكتب وبحوث منشورة سواءً العربية منها أو المعرّبة، أو تلك الإنكليزية والعثمانية والروسية، الأمر الذي أضفى على فصول الكتاب تنوُّع موضوعاته، منذ مطلع القرن السادس عشر وحتى عام 1916، عبر رصد ومتابعة تلك الوقائع التأريخية، التي تمخض عنها قيام الإمارة، بعد أن كانت قطر متداخلة ضمن قوى أخرى مجاورة، ولم تتضح بعد معالم كيانها السياسي على خارطة المنطقة، وهي مهمة تحتاج مَن يتصدّى لها التأني في إتيان النصوص المعززة لتلك التطورات وإخضاعها للبحث والدراسة، ليتمكّن من الإحالة بتلك الأوضاع واستخلاص ما يمكن من نتاج بشأنها، لعلنا نكون قد أسمهما بشكل متواضع في إماطة اللثام عن تأريخ هذا الجزء من الخليج العربي".
يتوزّع الكتاب على ستة فصول، جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية:
الفصل الأول: قطر في القرن الثامن عشر، الفصل الثاني: تاريخ قطر الحديث في المصادر الروسية المنشورة، الفصل الثالث: القوى القبلية في قطر وأثرها في نشوء الإمارة (1700-1868)، الفصل الرابع: قطر وحملة الأحساء العثمانية (1869-1874)، الفصل الخامس: الصراع العثماني - البريطاني على قطر في عهد الشيخ قاسم بن محمد آل ثاني (1871-1913)، الفصل السادس: العلاقات القطرية - النجدية (1517-1916). وأخيراً (الملاحق) وتضم: فهرس الأعلام، فهرس الأماكن والبلدان، وفهرس القبائل والجماعات.
